Action Epics, Indie Gems, and More This Spring

by Clayton Bushong

Spring is in the air, and we hope you don’t forget about us when the nice weather comes around, because there are some fantastic movies coming out.

I’ll just start with the one I am looking forward to the most. The Northman is from visionary director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) who is one of my favorites, and is an action-filled tale that follows a young Viking prince on a quest to avenge his father’s murder.  The cast is insane and includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe. This is shaping up to be the can’t-miss movie of the spring.

What would spring be with out a superhero in our lives? The upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is where we will continue the whole, well, multiverse madness. The Dr. Strange movies can be more cerebral than most of them, so hopefully we get a good story to go along with some fun Marvel action.

Continuing with beloved series, we see a new installment of the Downton Abbey story where we see The Crawley family go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the dowager countess’s newly inherited villa.

While not a new movie, Donbass is a 2018 Ukrainian film that we are bringing to the screening room this month. Called “a darkly satirical omnibus of scathing vignettes” by the Washington Post, Donbass serves as a crucial interpretation of the Russo-Ukrainian war. But the film is not, ultimately, a tale of one region or one conflict. It is about a world lost in post-truth and fake identities. It is a great film and helps.

Other screening room movies to watch out for this spring include Anaïs in Love, which is a buoyant French comedy from filmmaker Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet, Vortex, from provocateur French filmmaker Gaspar Noé, and Iranian road trip movie Hit the Road.

Although technically a spring movie, we will kick off summer with the much delayed, much anticipated Top Gun sequel Maverick. Tom Cruise, G-Force action, volleyball — what else do you need?

See you at the movies!
