An Exciting Time for Education at The Picture House

by Francile Albright

It’s been an exciting month in Education at The Picture House. We’ve begun our newest online film study for adults, Hayley Atwell Selects, hosted by our first Picture House ambassador: Hayley Atwell. We’ve enjoyed her conversations with special guests Bart Layton and Deborah Frances-White, the fascinating Q&As thanks to insightful questions from participants, and we look forward to two more classes in March.

Speaking of Hayley Atwell, she came all the way from London to be with us for the opening of our second location in Bronxville. While she was here, she spent a special Saturday morning at our Pelham location working with groups of middle and high school students from Amani Public Charter School and the Denzel Washington School of the Arts in Mt. Vernon, as well as Pelham Middle School and Pelham Memorial High School. Hayley shared her classical acting training with students as she led them through theater exercises on our community stage, and stayed for questions, red carpet pics, and individual conversations in our lobby. The positive impact from Hayley’s visit will be felt by students (and all of us) for a long time to come!

In addition to our special workshops, we just wrapped up February Break Camp at our Pelham location. Students in grades K–5 learned about different film genres and worked with instructors from Good For You Productions to make their own shorts. Their films will be shown on the big screen at our annual Student Film Showcase in the fall.

If you feel like you missed out, don’t worry, we have plenty of opportunities coming up. March’s online film study classes with Hayley in March will be announced soon, and mark your calendars for March 5th, when we’ll host Family Day at our new Bronxville location. Kids can take a free filmmaking workshop, and we’ll have a short film program, along with popcorn and refreshments! Read more about this event here.

Looking further ahead, camp will be back at TPH Pelham with a poetry-themed session for grades K–5 during spring break in April, and we’ll offer a full schedule of camps for students in grades K–12 throughout August. And don’t forget to drop by TPH Pelham on the first Saturday of March, April, and May for free and hilarious performances by our high school improv group, The Pelicants.

There are so many ways for students of all ages to get involved! Keep an eye on the Education section of our website and emails to stay in-the-know!
