In School Residencies

Picture House education residencies integrate filmmaking classes into the programs and curricula of schools, camps, or community centers. These customized residencies can vary in format from a 1-day workshop to an 8-day program or a semester-long enrichment offering.

We cover a wide range of filmmaking skills in these classes, but always emphasize creativity, film literacy and collaboration. Learning how to work as a team toward realizing a creative vision is not only fun and exciting, the lessons learned are invaluable to the growth and future success of our students throughout their education and beyond.

ENRICHMENTThese classes work particularly well as delayed start, lunchtime and after school programs.
MOVIE MAKING I: MAKE A TRAILERFor Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8

An age-appropriate introduction to movie making through a logical progression of basics covering character creation, storyboarding and simple camera work. After brainstorming a feature film concept, students will act, direct and film selected scenes to make their own trailer. Final video is edited and delivered as a password protected link 2 to 4 weeks after the final day of filming.

“HOW-TO” VIDEOSFor Grades K-2, 3-5

Kids of all ages love to make How-To videos! This class helps students bring their expertise to the screen while learning about simple camera and video techniques. The class will film short videos throughout the course and all pieces will be compiled into a final video delivered as a password protected link 2 to 4 weeks after the final class.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION IFor Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8

Students learn about camera techniques and story sequence in this fun and creative class. Basic stop motion animation techniques are introduced through different mediums including drawing, Legos, toys, clay and paper. Parents receive a password protected link to a short video example of students’ work 2 to 4 weeks after the final class.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION IIFor Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8

Students build on what they’ve learned in this more detailed exploration of stop motion animation techniques. Emphasis moves from simple technique toward more specific storytelling. Parents receive a password protected link to a short video example of students’ work 2 to 4 weeks after the final class.

MUSIC VIDEOFor Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 

A fun and trendy introduction to basic filmmaking. Students will brainstorm scenes and vignettes to film and set to their favorite songs. A final video will be delivered as a password protected link 2 to 4 weeks after the final class.

RESIDENCIESWe are able to work with principles and teachers to adapt any of these classes to specific school curriculum and projects.
DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKINGFor Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 

This class gives students the opportunity to explore topics that are meaningful to them and to highlight projects that they’re currently working on while learning the basics of documentary filmmaking, including camera, lighting and interview techniques. Parents receive a password protected link to the student’s short documentary 2 to 4 weeks after the final class.

CUSTOMIZED FILM STUDY AT THE PICTURE HOUSEFor All Grade Levels

ilm study workshops at The Picture House allow students to experience our unique access to children’s national and international short films and join in an activity, project or discussion following a screening. These workshops can be customized to coincide with specific units of study within the classroom and can be one-day workshops or a series of weekly classes. Our instructors work with classroom teachers to come up with the best fit for their needs.

“I BELIEVE” WORKSHOPFor Grades 2-12

This workshop is a 2 to 3 hour class. Students are led through a writing technique that starts with “I believe…” and are given the opportunity to share their statements aloud through a confidence- building exercise. They choose the statements that are most important to them and take turns working as actors and filmmakers to capture these statements on film. The final, edited film showcases the voices and values of the students and is delivered as a password protected link 2 to 4 weeks after the class.
