Little Gold Men: Oscar Nominations Are Here

by Sarah Soliman

Oscar nominations are out! It’s always gratifying when so many films that played at The Picture House get honored by the Academy, and this year’s exciting, eclectic line-up of ten Best Picture nominees have all screened at TPH — two of them, Women Talking and The Fabelmans, are playing at TPH Bronxville right now, while the film Living, currently lighting up the screen in the Main Hall at TPH Pelham, gained veteran actor Billy Nighy his first Oscar nomination (fun fact: all five of the Best Actor nominees are first-timers).

It’s truly a great Oscar year, with blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water sitting side-by-side with wildly original indies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Tár. Thanks to memorable and moving performances from Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Ke Huy Quan and Best Actor frontrunner Brendan Fraser, it’s also the year of the comeback, with audiences and the industry opening their hearts to two wonderful actors who found early success but haven’t been on our screens as much until 2022 vaulted them back into the spotlight.

Audience members who came to the 2022 German Film Festival might be joining us in rooting for All Quiet on the Western Front, which opened the festival this past fall before opening for a regular run at TPH (another fun fact: The Picture House was one of the few theaters that screened the film before it moved to Netflix). Academy members showed the film a lot of love with an impressive nine nominations, including one for Best Picture and one for Best International Feature.

In the next few weeks, The Picture House will also be screening the Oscar nominated shorts, which is a great opportunity to pick up some points in any Oscars pool you might participate in.

One of the great things about awards season is that it happens in the winter. In other words, the perfect time to come to the theater and catch up on nominated movies! The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 12. How many movies do you think you can fit in in the next seven weeks? Whatever the answer, we hope you’ll join us at The Picture House for some of them!
