Summer Film Challenge #2 and Challenge #1 Winner

by Francile Albright

This week’s Summer Film Challenge dares you to let your creativity lead the way as you put your own spin on a favorite movie scene. Like all of our challenges, Your Favorite, Your Way is tailored to kids in grades K-5 but can be enjoyed by filmmaking students of all ages who want to put their imaginations to the test!

What You’ll Need

1.     iPhone or iPad with the iMovie app (free to download), or any camera and editing platform you’re comfortable with.

2.     A video or video clip of your favorite movie or scene in a movie.

Challenge Rules

In this challenge, you’ll re-create one of your favorite movie scenes your way! Videos should be live action (not animated) and under 3 minutes long. These can be shot-for-shot, or your version of the scene, as long as you’re using the original script. Those who are just starting out can submit videos without editing – extra points for attention to details with acting, props, and costumes. If you’re ready to try some simple editing, please check out the How to Edit in iMovie tutorial below. For even more ambitious filmmakers, we’ve included a tutorial on how to do a split screen, as well, so you can showcase your re-creation alongside the original. Follow the links under Inspiration for fun video examples.

To Get Started

1.     Pick your scene, your cast, and your location; gather your costumes and props; practice first!
2.     For those trying their hand at editing, watch the How to Edit in iMovie here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zBzDXGhJuk
3.     For those trying a split screen, watch the tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j-13jCFIMI

To Submit Your Video

Save your finished video and send to teacher@thepicturehouse.org no later than 5:00 pm on Monday, August 3rd. The winning video(s) will be shared via email and TPH social media on Wednesday, August 5th. All videos submitted by the deadline will be included in our Student Showcase in September. Please include Film Challenge #2 in the subject line, and include in the body of the email the name of the movie you’re recreating, plus your first name and grade.

Film Challenge #1 Winner

In our first Film Challenge last week we asked participants to create a short stop motion animation video — 1 minute or less — using any kind of art or object – paper, clay, legos, drawing, toys, or even themselves! The subject of the challenge was Beat the Heat.

We were so impressed with the creative submissions we received. It was a tough choice to make but the Challenge #1 winning video is Water by fifth-grader Liam Clark. Congratulations to Liam and thank you to everyone who participated!
