What’s happening at The Picture House

The Blockbuster is BACK!

by Amy Cole

After a year of delays and setbacks, Hollywood is ready to roar back to the big screen.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and with it comes parades, barbecues with family and friends, excursions to the beach or pool (if you’re lucky), and for those of us who love movies, the anticipation of some of the biggest releases of the year. As the weather heats up, so does the exciting slate of films making their way (finally) to theaters. With people increasingly more comfortable returning to some of their old habits and haunts, Hollywood is betting on the summer blockbuster to draw audiences back to the movies.

Not to be outdone by Hollywood, The Picture House, with a brand new HVAC system, ongoing Covid precautions in place, and Westchester’s Best Popcorn on the ready, is open and set for summer.

This weekend we kicked-off our season with one of the most anticipated thrillers of the year – A Quiet Place: Part II. Since showing an advance screening of A Quiet Place in 2018, we (along with film lovers across the globe) have been waiting with baited breath for this sequel. Originally slated to open days before the world shut down, director and co-star John Krasinski decided to make the long-delayed Part II available only in theaters. While all eyes may be on the box office, Krasinski plans to spend the weekend traveling to some of the theaters playing A Quiet Place: Part II as an act of solidarity with the audiences that venture out to see it. As he recently told The New York Times, “I have no idea what’s going to happen with the box office. What’s most important to me is that if you want to see this movie, I’m going to show it to you.”

We share Krasinski’s sentiment. The blockbuster may be back but the allure of the big screen, and most importantly the strength of our Picture House community, really never left the block, and for that we are most grateful.

As always, we want to hear from you. What summer blockbuster are you most looking forward to? Follow us and comment on social or email us at info@thepicturehouse.org.
