Hollywood has spent the past several weeks honoring some of the best films of 2022. Months of campaigns, interviews, red carpets, and awards given out by different guilds, all lead up to film’s big night, the Academy Awards. It’s been an exciting season, and questions remain about who will take home two of the biggest awards — Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor.

The British Academy Film Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, two of the most important Oscar precursors, honored four different actors across those two categories. Jamie Lee Curtis won the SAG award for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Kerry Condon took home the BAFTA for The Banshees of Inisherin. Elvis’ Austin Butler was BAFTA’s Best Actor, SAG went to The Whale’s Brendan Fraser.

There’s something special about an Oscar night when some of the biggest races don’t seem to be a forgone conclusion. It gives the ceremony an extra sprinkle of magic, especially for those of us who love movies and love to discuss which films and performances have meant the most to us from the past year.
